About Coconut Flooring
78Coconut flooring is sustainable flooring
Coconut flooring is a great example of sustainable flooring because it is made from a renewable resource. This makes coconut flooring more environmentally friendly than hardwood flooring. Coconut flooring is also hypo-allergenic so it is a healthier flooring choice than carpet.
The coconut palm is one of the quickest growing species on the planet. In a mere 5 to 6 years a coconut seed can grow into a coconut palm. The coconut palm can grow to extraordinary heights in search of sunshine and produces coconuts for 60 to 70 years. After this time the coconut stops producing coconut fruit and is called a senile palm. There are millions of senile coconut palms in the world and they are a nearly untapped resource.

More about coconut flooring
The great thing about senile coconut palms is that the timber they
produce is hard and suitable for a variety of uses including making
furniture, house wares and flooring.
Coconut flooring comes in three main varieties: vertical coconut flooring, horizontal coconut flooring and
strand woven coconut flooring. Although coconut is not strictly speaking a tree but a
‘palm’ it produces strong and hard flooring that looks great. Coconut
has a fantastic end grain which makes coconut flooring very attractive
and similar to hardwood flooring. As with strand woven bamboo flooring,
coconut flooring comes either in a light naturalized color or in a
darker ‘carbonized’ color. The darker color is achieved by heating the
coconut timber to ‘caramelize’ the sugars. It is possible to combine the
naturalized and carbonized coconut flooring types to make a distinctive
tiger stripe pattern.
Coconut flooring has a Janka Hardness of about 1,500 pounds force making
it harder than oak, maple, ash and walnut flooring. Not only is coconut
flooring very hard it is also very durable. It will last a lifetime
like hardwood flooring and it can withstand high traffic situations and
heavy furniture.
Another great advantage of coconut flooring is that it is anti
allergenic flooring like hardwood flooring. It provides no place for dust mites
to breed, live and excrete. It is dust mite excrement that attacks the
respiratory passages and is a major trigger for allergic reactions and
asthma attacks.
By buying coconut flooring you are getting a beautiful, hard and long
lasting alternative to hardwood flooring that is anti-allergenic. You
are also helping in the effort to stop deforestation and climate change.
And finally you are helping to support the developing economies of
South East Asia and the Pacific Islands.
